Animal Cruelty is Now a Federal Felony

On Monday, November 25th, President Trump signed the PACT Act (Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture), making animal cruelty a federal felony. All 50 states have laws against animal cruelty on their books at the state level, and now, under the PACT Act, those convicted can face federal felony charges, fines and up to seven years in prison. . 2018’s New Jersey Animal Intake and Disposition Summary shows that out of a total of 83,550 cats and dogs impounded in the state during the year, 52,764 were either redeemed or adopted and 9,832 were euthanized, averaging 27 per day.
