Marine Mammal Stranding Center Says Thank You

Dear Jean and Foundation members:

THANK YOU for your generous grant award of $10,000 from the Staats Foundation.

Last year was a difficult time with the many dolphins (154 to be exact) that came ashore with the deadly disease Morbillivirus. Our total strandings for the year 2013 was 292, which is a record number for us in one year.

This year has brought us many young seals, seven of which needed our help. We have been answering many calls from all over the state for seals ashore, but find that many are just resting after their long migration from northern waters. One youngster was trapped on a frozen bay and we asked the local fire departments for assistance by their ice rescue team. We were able to corral the little guy and get him back to the open ocean. (See our facebook page for the photos.)

We are grateful to the Norman E. and Gwyneth L. Staats Foundation for its consideration to support our efforts to rescue, rehabilitate, and release marine mammals and sea turtles back to their natural home – the sea.

I am enclosing a photo of one of our little “patients” – a grey seal pup that still has his birth coat on his flippers. This little one has infections and is pitifully thin, but we should have him back to the sea within a few weeks.

I hope that you will be able to visit us this year so that Bob and I can give you a personal tour of our facilities.

Sincerely,

Sheila M. Dean
Co-Director
