“The Cats On The Border Project” To: Jean Smith, I retired to a small town in upstate New York for a quiet retirement. It’s been anything but quiet. Floods that could of swept my home away and “Porch Kitties”. Many Porch Kitties. I already have three that adopted me. One has special needs. One day, another “Porch Kitty” came into my life. He was eating then he stopped. I need help! I called Debbie Race who is with your project. …

Dear Paws & Claws, We are Bonnie and Jerry. We have 23 acres and live in the woods. We are both retired, we take care of Bonnie’s mom (age 95). I was a farmer, Bonnie worked in the medical field. We have 20 layer chickens and a dog. Last October we noticed a cat living under the hen house, so I started feeding it. Then it moved inside our storage shed. Donna, our friend and neighbor, told us about Paws …

Dear Friend of the Community Foundation, Since 1972, the annual support provided by you and other generous Community Sponsors has built a strong and effective Community Foundation. Thanks to your operating donations, the Community Foundation built a youth philanthropy program that educates and inspires students in kindergarten through grade twelve, provided strategic planning services at no charge to local nonprofit organizations, and awarded over 500 grants and scholarships in just the past year. Each day brings a new opportunity for the …

Dear Jean, Once again, I am so incredibly grateful for your generosity. I cannot thank you enough for the grant of $14,000. It enables us to do so much. As you know, when we started, mass killing in shelters was the norm. Today, some 50,000,000 people live in communities saving at least 80% of the animals, over 10,000,000 people live in communities where the municipal shelter is saving at least 90% of dogs and cats in their shelters; and, nearly 2,000,000 people …

Suzanne & (Angel) . . .
To: Cats on the Border Dear Sponsor There are moments when I think I’ve died & gone to Heaven. I hope that gives you some indication as to how thrilled I am that the farm cats here where I live are eligible to participate in the Cats on the Border project. To date I’ve had a total of 15 cats that have taken the trip to the vet’s. Seven of those 15 have been female. I heave a great sigh …

Please know that all …
Dear Jean, I have so many things to thank you for, first the opportunity to work with such a wonderful organization that does amazing work making a difference. Without your help Diana, Deb and I would not be able to help cats and kittens in as large a number. Whether it’s bottle feeding orphaned kittens, treating an injury or spay-neuter release, they are all labors of love. Bless you for making it possible. Thank you also for the funds made …
Thanks for the treatment and care you give cats to cut down the population. God Bless, Beth F. . . .

From the kitties: John Boy & Jesse thank you too! I think!! 🙂 I am 8 years old. My name is Jessie. I love animals but we can’t pay to spay and neuter them so thanks a lot. We live on a dead end road so people just drop them off here. We fixed our garage & porch with straw to keep them warm and we feed them. Sometimes that’s hard but me & Mammie (Grams) do it. We once …
Dear Jean, Thank you so much for your thoughtful and financial support for our feral cats. Mary and I are located on a dead end road next to Tioga Downs Casino and Racing Facility. Needless to say we get strays every year, possibly from the horse barns. We have been feeding these cats for years and, even when we really couldn’t afford it, paid for some to be neutered spayed. We are on a very low fixed income and are …
Dear Circle of Compassion For Animals, Thanks to you, more than 2,860 animals in Yavapai County have been saved in 2017. On behalf of them, and all of us at YHS, thank you for giving these furry friends hope, a new future, and a loving home to call their own. This year our family fostered a litter of four kittens just five or six weeks old: Judas, Jasmine, Jolene, and Jordan. They stayed with us for a month. A man …
Dear Sponsor of Cats on the Border Project, Wow! What a Christmas present! Thank you! Through the Cats on the Border project, I was able to get three farm cats spayed/neutered recently. I was particularly relieved to get one female spayed. She seems to be particularly active and I believe her to have given birth to 3 litters of kittens this year. Unfortunately, while she seems quite capable of giving birth to kittens, she’s not physically able to manufacture enough …
Jean, Merry Christmas! Thank you so much for making 2017 a great year! Love, Deb & Craig . . PACS receives many heartfelt thank-you notes from pet owners and like-minded animal organizations. See more letters and notes here.
Dear Jean, Without an inquiry, request or application, you approved a grant for Spay Neuter Intervention Project SNIP, based on a referral from Sabrina Hansen. To say it is appreciated is an understatement. So often grantors reject organizations making a difference for animals, while wealthy humane organizations with staggering salaries reap the benefits. Paws and Claws Society, Inc. is not in that club. I have attached an invoice documenting the 154th feral (Willets Point) spayed, vaccinated and Revolution. Fee …
Dearest Trustees of the STAATS Foundation, I wish to thank you for your recent donation of $5,000 given to us for the care of the FELV cats at Aslan’s Cats Sanctuary. Dearest Jean Smith & trustees of the STAATS foundation, Cats sunning themselves on window seats. Cats curled up in cozy egg shaped beds. Cats doing gymnastics on their lawn furniture in our secured yard. Cats brought to us in life threatening conditions and being cared for to live normal, comfortable lives. A holiday wish for the strays From out my window I can see the garden turning white, May someone help the feral cats out there on such a night! May someone see them searching for bits upon the frozen grass, And put a little food that they’ll find whenever they do pass. Some people say ‘There’s nothing wrong, they run around all right,’ But it takes a while to starve — it doesn’t happen overnight. Their silent forms slip past …
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Smith, I hope the world is treating you right! I wanted to let you know the latest from the Physicians Committee. It’s been an incredible last few months. As you know, earlier this year, we managed to halt all use of animals in medical schools in the United States and Canada. But at higher levels of training—in some trauma courses or residencies, for example—some animals have still been used. In October, we managed to end the …

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Smith: I just sent an update a few weeks ago, but I wanted to share some great news. First, as you know, we have long been working to stop the use of animals in medical schools. When I was a medical student at the George Washington University, I refused to participate in a required “dog lab,” and I vowed to end these laboratories. Well, the last two hold-outs—Johns Hopkins University and the University of Tennessee—have both …

Dear Jean, Tom is a barn cat that I rescued from the shelter. He recently had surgery at Parkway Vet Hospital to try and relieve suffering from a chronic ear infection. Jean, Thank you so much for helping Sweetie. Words could never express how grateful we are. She is forever thankful. Paws & Claws, Last week my precious rescued pittie girl, Gem, became mysteriously ill. Dr. Ernst at Parkway Vet Hospital went above and beyond to find out what was wrong with her. After 3 days they offered a transfusion to possibly help her with a very slim chance at survival. At that time she was so critical and I made the decision to euthanize even though the transfusion would be partially funded. It was a difficult choice to make but …
