From the Chemung County SPCA Summer 2019 Newsletter:
WE’RE GROWING!
Every year, more than 1,200 homeless cats, dogs, puppies, and kittens are brought to the Chemung County SPCA. Other animal shelters in the Southern Tier are faced with similar numbers. With a limited number of adoptive homes available and limited space at area shelters, minimizing reproduction is the most practical solution to address the ongoing problem of pet overpopulation. We need to treat the cause of pet overpopulation instead of just dealing with the symptom!
To combat pet overpopulation in our region, we have offered affordable spay/neuter services to income-eligible pet owners, other shelters, and rescue groups for many years. But due to the growing demand for this service, our current facility can no longer meet community needs. Thanks to support from the Community Foundation, The Anderson Foundation, The Paws & Claws Society, and the ASPCA, we will be building a dedicated surgical facility to meet this growing demand.
The new facility will allow us to offer more clinics, increase the number of pets treated, and house recovering pets while providing better safety and working conditions for our staff and volunteers. We also plan to offer a Community Cat Program that will work to reduce the population of free-roaming cats in our region as well as periodic affordable vaccine and wellness clinics.
