The numbers are dropping each year, but work continues to be needed, as an average of 58 cats and dogs are still being killed every day in New Jersey.
The 2014 Animal Intake and Disposition Summary shows that, of a total of 80,346 cats and dogs impounded in New Jersey last year, 47,094 were either redeemed or adopted and 21, 076 were euthanized – an average of 58 per day.
Looking back at the totals from 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013, those numbers have dropped from, respectively, 96, to 88, to 85, to 73, and to 64, before dropping to 58 in 2014.
The numbers still show cats being euthanized at a much higher rate than dogs. In 2014, 1.5 times more cats were impounded than dogs. Cats were less likely to be redeemed and adopted (combined, the numbers were 24,562 for dogs vs 22,532 for cats), yet cats were euthanized at 3.86 times the rate of dogs!
As we’ve said before, You have to know where you have been and where you are now in order to know where you need to go.
